Free Think U DC Ambassador Will Moyer met with Alexander McCobin of Students for Liberty at CPAC 2013 to discuss the ways in which the two organizations can help each other in the fight for liberty, including academic liberty, on campuses across America. As a part of that discussion, we want to highlight one example of the great work that Students for Liberty is accomplishing.
Students For Liberty has announced the first ever Free Speech Week. With the recent success of free speech walls across the world, they will be coordinating a week of activism events to promote and defend the most critical of all liberties.
Free Speech Week will take place from April 1-8. SFL is partnering with several great organizations including the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education to help provide students with the resources needed to make Free Speech Week happen on your campus.
Free Speech Week events will range from building free speech walls to hosting speakers to screening movies and various activism events. Activism kits will be sent at no cost to student groups who request them and project grants of up to $200 will be awarded to approved events.
Also, students who lead a Free Speech Week event on their campus will be awarded 5,000 Impact Points by Free Think U.
If you have any questions about this event please contact SFL Program Manager, Kelly Jemison, at kjemison@studentsforliberty.org. If you have any questions about receiving your Free Think U Impact Points for your participation in Free Speech Week events, please contact Free Think U Outreach Director, James Van Eerden, at james@freethinku.com.
This site gives me great hope that the circle of free knowledge will be unbroken that there are actual human beings associated with centers of higher education. Every generation must fight the good fight or loose it for their offspring. Right is right. There is black and white. There are human beings and there are animals. If we believe consequences are inconsequential we are no different than the beasts of the fields and spreading the wealth around is an excuse to be lazy. Even animals know better than that. A conscience is a divine hotline, our mind a radio transmitter and receiver. Human beings have special divine tools. There is responsibility. God expects great things from great gifts. That is the difference. If we don’t use our conscience it is the same as being an animal. It’s actually worse. Those who choose to rise to the task of being human are not animals. The rest, the socialists, who can work for themselves but choose to take what does not belong to them, those who work so hard to deceive, trap and enslave the ignorant others thru manipulative laws and lies need to be outed. Freedom is not being intimidated or backing down. There is true evil which seeks to enslave. Those who give in and throw their dead weight onto those who have not given in to sloth should die as the lazy, drug infested, copulating curs and lemmings they are. I have absolutely no tolerance for them or for race-baiting political anti-FREE-market socialists manipulators. They do nothing to raise mankind up. They can only destroy-hence Evil Exists. Freedom of Speech fights against it and can inspire those in doubt before they face death.
In order to protect our liberty, we have to understand what our liberty truly is. We must be able to define “freedom of speech” and understand the full implications of such a concept. In his essay, “On Liberty”, J.S. Mill argues “there ought to exist the fullest liberty of professing and discussing, as a matter of ethical conviction, any doctrine, however immoral it may be considered.” Mill suggested and fully believed that no question was answered, no discussion closed. He viewed free speech not as the means, but as the end. On the contrary, his critics saw free speech as a means to an end, that end being truth. Many suggested Mill had an unrealistic view of society and denied the existence of absolute truth. Have history and tradition not answered many a question? Has God not revealed truth to us? Shall we reconsider the morality and legality of murder? That question has already been answered; murder is wrong. Should that be open to discussion? Maybe an open and revolving discussion is the best way to determine truth. Perhaps, the best way to conclude that the truth is the truth is to continue fighting the same fight and winning time after time. Is the truth strong enough to prevail over time? If we take Mill’s definition of freedom of speech and therefore, fight for the liberty of all to discuss any doctrine, we must be ready to pursue, preserve, and propagate truth and justice in the marketplace of ideals.
