Why Are Buckley & Fusion
Conservatism Important?

Part 2: The Three Strands of Conservatism

What exactly does Fusionism “fuse” together?  The three strands of Fusion Conservatism discussed in this session include (1) The libertarian strand of limited domestic government, with an emphasis on individual liberty and free markets; (2) The upholding of traditional Judeo/Christian morality, with an emphasis on the civil society; and (3) The Anticommunists who saw the rise of worldwide communism as the greatest threat to Western Civilization.  William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of National Review magazine, and Sr. Editor Frank Meyer, are credited for fusing together this common ground synthesis allowing conservatism to become a movement of ideas in action with political consequences.
