On September 11, 2013, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, wrote an article in the New York Times in which he decried the use of the term “exceptional” in describing the United States.  His written statements indicated a much different sense of that word than how it has been historically applied to our nation.  The U.S. is truly exceptional in that no other nation has ever attempted to govern itself the way our founders devised our system of government.  The Heritage Foundation’s president, Jim Demint, replied to Mr. Putin the following letter.  As you consider how American you are, reading this letter will help define that question for you.
