Ronald Reagan’s story is similar to many who became disillusioned with the big government failures of New Deal liberalism and would soon gradually make his way to conservatism. Ronald Reagan was born in 1911 to two Democrat parents and cast his first vote for president in 1932 for Franklin D. Roosevelt. Involved in politics most of his adult life, he remained a FDR Democrat until events began to change his mind. In particular, as president of the Screen Actors Guild and his interactions with the violent union forces, plus his 9,000+ speeches as General Electric’s Goodwill Ambassador, allowed him to hear from people all across America about how government interference and regulation was hurting American business and stymied individual freedom. In this first session, Dr. Nash takes us through the transformation of Reagan from a liberal Hollywood actor to a devout conservative leader.
