Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, and others began planning a strategy that would return power to the Republican party and conservative ideas in the days leading up to the 1994 midterm elections. These leaders wanted to break the “minority mindset” their party had held in the House and Senate for the last 40 years. They began by building what would become the “Contract with America,” a set of conservative initiatives they promised to enact in the first 100 days of the new Congress if they were elected the majority party. Knott continues his overview of this moment in conservative history by showing how they built this contract and what happened after the ’94 election.
