Often the practical outcome of such debates in one area of our society broaden into the whole of our culture. What is done in college now can in the future affect a much broader part of our culture. It is, after all, where the next generations leaders are being taught. We must engage with this debate as ultimately it determines how we view justice and equity, ideas that concern us all.
In seeking to bring our diverse nation to a place of peace and unity while preserving each person’s unique heritage, we have perhaps boiled the baby in the bathwater. America was brought into being on the shoulders of Western Civilization, a civilization of unprecedented accomplishment in politics, art, science, and many other areas. People from many nations, tribes, tongues gathered together to bring about a truly exceptional nation of one people, under one rule of law: our Constitution. Our goal should be to continue that great inheritance even while telling our children of the brave men and women who came before us from whatever past homeland they came. We must continue the ancient discussion of the One and the Many. Great civilizations before us have had this debate, we must have it too.
