Michael Miller begins this discussion by cautioning Christians to not exclusively focus on the physical needs. To effect real, meaningful change, we must also turn to God and the transformative power of the Gospel. And the Gospel is more than just meeting physical needs. The Gospel brings a complete transformation of life, including renewed hope, faith, and love, which in turn can greatly change how one approaches the material aspects of life.
This video also tells the story of Janet Nkubana, whose own experience with the Gospel led her to use her business to bring hope and healing to others in her neighborhood. She and others, like Rwandan Anglican Bishop John Rucyahana, now help Rwandans heal through the power of forgiveness and the grace of Jesus Christ. Their lives illustrate the words of C.S. Lewis:
If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. The Apostles themselves, who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English Evangelicals who abolished the Slave Trade, all left their mark on Earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth “thrown in”: aim at earth and you will get neither.
