Is There a Cure
for Poverty?

Circles of Exchange

In this section, we will discuss one of the biggest things holding people back from prosperity: lack of access. Unfortunately, the common “teach a man to fish” principle does not apply to most of the world’s poor. As host Michael Miller puts it, “The poor know how to fish. What they lack is access to markets and networks of productivity.”

The following videos explore these ideas from a few angles, including examining Ireland as a brief case study of a once extremely poor country that leapt forward by connecting itself to broader markets and establishing a system that encouraged entrepreneurship and investment. They also look at the tragic effects of the Western agricultural subsidies, including the destruction of agricultural jobs in the developing world.

“In this rapidly integrating world,” Doug Seebeck asks, “how do I best love my neighbor so that everybody has the ability to have what I have?”
