Should We Allow
Assisted Suicide?

Closing Statements for and against Legalizing Assisted Suicide

The question of assisted suicide is related to other issues of life and death.  A culture that either protects life or protects the freedom to choose death should do so consistently, whether considering the issue of abortion, euthanasia, or mercy killings. To bring this experience to a close, watch as we return to the Intelligence2 debate and their closing statements.

To think further about the issues is the goal of every FTU course experience.  These questions might be a good place to start further discussion with others:

  • Are we making people endure terrible pain and suffering if we don’t allow doctors to help them commit suicide?  Is there any way to address the pain and suffering other than through ending their life?
  • If we were to allow assisted suicide, what safeguards or rules would have to be in place?
  • What can be learned from studying those nations who have already initiated allowance for assisted suicide?
  • Are we taking away autonomy and dignity by not allowing assisted suicide?
  • What’s the difference between euthanizing pets and euthanizing people?
  • Is assisted suicide a personal issue?
  • Is this issue primarily about choice?
