Should You Be
Politically Correct?

Group Think

In May of 2014, Michael Bloomberg, former Mayor of New York City and billionaire media mogul, gave the annual commencement speech at Harvard University.  His theme was the loss of diverse opinion in our schools and how he is against that trend.  In this chapter you will watch a good portion of that address. Consider the following quotes from his speech prior to viewing it.

“Tolerance for other people’s ideas and the freedom to express your own are . . . perpetually vulnerable to the tyrannical tendencies of monarchs, mobs, and majorities, and lately we’ve seen those tendencies manifest themselves too often, both on college campuses and in our society,”

“On every issue you must follow the evidence where it leads and listen to people where they are…If you do that, there is no problem we cannot solve, no gridlock we cannot break, no compromise we cannot broker…”

“A liberal arts education must not be the art of liberalism…”

“The more we embrace the free exchange of ideas and the more we accept that political diversity, the healthier we are and the stronger our society will be.”

An estimated 32,000 students, faculty, parents, alumni, and guests gathered under mild, sunny skies at the leafy outdoor Tercentenary Theatre to hear his speech. Join them and keep in mind the sections of the speech that are highlighted above.
