We have to be convinced of the fact that ideas have consequences. What Dr. Deneen has been stating in this experience is an idea – that for liberty to be real it must be ordered, and that such order must come from the order of a created world. There really is no call for action here, but rather an idea to be embodied in our choices. This concept must inform how we view law in our land, how we vote, how we act toward our neighbor, and numerous other “applications.” So to summarize, read through several quotes on ordered liberty from trustworthy sources, and then live according to this ideal.
“Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive.” — Theodore Roosevelt
“Our American polity is a regime of ordered liberty, designed to give justice and order and freedom all their due recognition and part.” — Russell Kirk, The American Cause
“America stands for individual liberty, but that means an ordered liberty.” — Bainbridge Colby
“It is better to cherish virtue and humanity, leaving much to free will . . . than to attempt to make men machines and instruments of political benevolence. The world as a whole will gain by a liberty without which virtue cannot exist.” — Edmund Burke
“Whatever each man can separately do, without trespassing on others, he has a right to do for himself . . . all men have equal rights; but not to equal things.” — Edmund Burke
“Whenever a separation is made between liberty and justice, neither . . . is safe.” — Edmund Burke
