In this chapter, Davis highlights the story of Africa, beginning with its significant role in biblical history. He explains that many scholars consider Africa to be the “cradle of humankind.” Sadly, the continent of Africa has been plagued by many tragedies. The shameful slave trade, greedy imperialism, and horrible genocides are some of the most notable atrocities. Most recently it is the deadly HIV/AIDS crisis that is killing hundreds of thousands. However, as Davis explains, this crisis is manageable and preventable in some regard:
The missing piece? The missing piece is us. Yes, this problem is massive. … But when good people mobilize, they can make a massive difference in the lives of others. One at a time, we need to stand up. We need to open our eyes wide to the AIDS crisis in Africa. (Chapter 3)
