Beatrix Potter was born on July 28, 1866, in Kensington, London. The Potters were a typical Victorian family, living in a large house with servants. During her childhood, Beatrix was tutored and instructed by a nanny, spending most of her time in the nursery at the top of the house and often only seeing her parents at bedtime. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was a children’s book written by Potter that recounts the mischievous deeds of young Peter Rabbit, as he is chased around a garden by Mr. McGregor. By reading about this rabbit, many young people develop their own moral imaginations concerning right and wrong.
Interestingly, the story was written for five-year-old Noel Moore, son of Potter’s former nanny Annie Carter Moore. The book was a huge success, and multiple reprints were issued in the years following the book’s immediate release. The Tale of Peter Rabbit has been translated into 36 languages and has sold over 45 million copies – it is one of the best-selling books of all time.
