The Eye of the Beholder: Raphael and Michelangelo

The relationship between Michelangelo and Raphael has been well documented in history books.  Both men were artistic giants during the Renaissance, but both were unique in their abilities and demeanor.  Michelangelo was noted for his unsettled and anti-social personality, while Raphael was affable and engaging.

Because of Michelangelo’s personality, he was often underpaid and overworked, while Raphael enjoyed much public acclaim and significant monetary compensation for the work he completed.  The relationship between these two extraordinary men was cordial but often competitive. They were viewed as vaunted rivals who were able to maintain some semblance of civility.
