At the heart of this issue is your personal view of morality. In another course (A Free People’s Suicide?) the case has been set forth that any notion of true liberty must include some degree of morality. And morality must include the ideal of religion to have any meaning. Many students enter college determined to make decisions based upon who they wish to become, but without a real vision for morals, they fall victim to the “sex crazed cats” that are all about them. So the challenge becomes something like this:
- What have you done to establish moral rules that you are willing to live by?
- How will you avoid the trap of peer pressure in a college setting, especially if you walk onto campus not knowing anyone else?
- Who do you know that you respect that has already recently been to college and come through it intact for who they are? Spend some time with them and ask tough questions about what it like, how realistic books like “Charlotte Simmons” are, and what they did to make it through.
- Have you allowed your dorm room to become a brothel?
Open frank discussions of the ideas found in this course with your peers, your mentors, and anyone else you can trust to think freely will help you clarify and expand your views on this issue. In a world where such things don’t get discussed, perhaps you can be one to start this conversation anew.
